What Participants and Partners Are Saying

  • It's just so different here. I was able to express myself freely and I really enjoyed my time here, even though I wasn't expecting to. I learned that talking to someone really helps. I just felt more energized, more engaged here.

  • YMCA Alternative Suspension* is important for our school. Suspensions (at home) are not effective. Supervision is necessary to reflect on behaviour and monitor learning.

*YMCA Alternative Suspension is the former name of the Back on Track program.

  • Having someone who takes the time to check in with Ben regularly, who supports us as parents, and who shows him that there are still people who care about him despite his difficulties at school has had a very positive impact. He found the tools he needed to finish high school in the program.

  • The program successfully encourages a significant proportion of participants to become aware of and take a stance on the behaviours that led to their suspension. In quantifiable terms, these changes translate into significant school retention rates, given the profile of the youth referred to the program.
